Designing a home is a creative collaboration. As our founder and principal designer, Kristen Thomas, explains, “Understanding who our clients are as people, how they want to live, and designing around that is the foundation of everything we do.” At Studio Thomas, the goal is simple: to give our clients the best experience possible. Each project is a journey toward intentional living, one that begins with listening and learning about who you are and ends with an environment that feels personal to you.

TONE + DISCOVERY: THE HEART OF OUR PROCESS 

Before our team begins any sketches or selections, we begin each project with curiosity. Our approach is rooted in understanding, not assumptions. The first phase of our design process is about discovery, learning about who you are, how you live, what inspires you, and what you want your home to feel like. By taking time to understand your current and aspired lifestyle, we create spaces that reflect you.

• We begin by exploring your personal style. Open your closet and notice what you naturally reach for. Do you prefer casual or more tailored pieces, or a mix of both? Are there certain colours or textures that frequently reappear? What words resonate with you: modern, edgy, sporty, classic, refined?

• From there, we’ll ask you to reflect more broadly. Think about the movies you enjoy, the car you drive, your hobbies, and your favorite restaurants and hotels. These choices reveal subtle insights about the environments you are naturally drawn to. Maybe it’s elegance, or maybe it’s simplicity, or something in between. Our goal is to find the common thread.

• Then, visualize the home you want to live in: imagine yourself walking into your new home. What do you see, smell, and hear? Is there music playing, and if so, what kind? What is the atmosphere of the space? Is it calm or lively? These sensory details help us shape a home that resonates with your emotions and daily rhythms.

• We’ll also explore the transitions shaping your life. What are the obstacles you’re hoping to overcome? Are you entering a new chapter – welcoming new babies or rediscovering your space after an empty nest? Has your current home stopped reflecting who you are or who you are becoming? Understanding these shifts allows the ST team to design with intention and purpose.

After we’ve learned what’s meaningful to you, we can begin ideation. Guided by our company’s core values – stability, warmth, innovation, nirvana, and growth – our team approaches each project collectively. Each designer, project manager, and stylist shares a unified vision: to create homes that are timeless, authentic, and meaningfully lived in.

THE SEVEN PHASES

The Studio Thomas experience moves through seven intentional phases. While the work is grounded in design, the process is about collaboration, trust, and transformation.

1. Concept Development

TONE + DISCOVERY 

• We begin with an in-depth client intake to understand your lifestyle, vision, and priorities. This is where we align expectations with your builder and architect, curate inspiration, and craft conceptual presentations. This is our discovery phase.

2. Schematic Design 

INSPIRATION + CLARITY 

• Layouts, finishes, and architectural details are refined. Renderings reveal how the design will live and breathe, translating your vision into form.

3. Design Development

PRECISION + CONFIDENCE 

• The creatives at Studio Thomas finalize selections, complete full-scope CAD drawings, and coordinate with vendors. Every detail is tailored to your daily life, ensuring beauty and functionality. 

4. Processing 

MOMENTUM + TRUST 

• We manage site visits, collaborate with tradesmen, and oversee installations. This is where ideas become tangible, and design intent takes shape.

5. Installation 

ANTICIPATION + TRANSFORMATION 

• Custom furnishings, lighting, art, and accessories are placed with meticulous care. It’s the moment your home comes to life, a culmination of shared vision and craftsmanship.

6. Customer Service 

CARE + CONTINUE 

• Even after installation, our relationship continues. We are available for final touches and offer guidance on maintenance and care, ensuring the design endures.

7. Reflection 

GROWTH + EMPOWERMENT 

• With every project, we gather feedback to deepen our understanding of what resonates most with our clients. Many leave the process with more than a finished home; they’ve learned the principles of intentional living and discovered something meaningful about themselves.

By the end of each project, our goal is to have guided and taught you throughout the design process. We don’t want to override your ideas, as KT has said, “the goal is always that a space represents our client, but through a refined, artistic lens.” We want to translate your lifestyle into a design that feels like you.
